San Diego Natural History Museum was founded in 1874. The Museum's mission is to present the natural world through research, education and exhibits. Being the oldest institution in Southern California, it is truly a representation of earlier times. There is danger as well as fun here. You can see live snakes, insects, lizards, frogs, birds, fossils and even skeletons.

The museum has a corner for everyone. For children there are fun activities, games and crafts. To increase their scientific knowledge, various experimental step ups are displayed and conducted. The Mineralogy Department maintains an extensive collection on minerals from southern California, as well as a synoptic collection of minerals from around the world, including 26,000 catalogued specimens of minerals, meteorites and precious gems.
