Maritime Museum of San Diego has one of the best collections of historic ships of the world. It is renowned worldwide for preserving, maintaining and operating old vessels.
The museum came into existence by the efforts of some local historians and maritime volunteers who acquired the sailing ship ‘Star of India' in 1927. ‘Star of India' is the world's oldest active ship.
The collection at museum includes – the steam ferry Berkley (1898), the steam yacht Medea (1904), the Californian, the Pilot (1914) and the H.M.S. Surprise. The ‘Star of India' is sailed at least once a year.
More than 200 private events are hosted at the museum's ships every year. Many school children visit the museum for educational purposes. Scholars and researchers from all over the world visit the museum to obtain precious information. “Mains'1 Haul: A Journal of Pacific Maritime History”, published by the museum promotes the study of maritime history.
